“Mission: Impossible 8” Trailer: Tom Cruise Returns for “The Final Reckoning” in Action-Packed First Footage

The highly anticipated eighth installment in the Mission: Impossible franchise has a new title and a thrilling first trailer. Mission: Impossible 8 will officially be called The Final Reckoning, confirming that this will be the grand conclusion to the story arc introduced in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning. Set for release on May 23, 2025, the film was initially scheduled for a 2022 release, but delays caused by the pandemic and the SAG-AFTRA actors’ strike pushed the launch back.

Tom Cruise shared the title and a poster for the film on social media, accompanied by the caption, “Every choice has led to this.” In the gripping new trailer, Cruise’s Ethan Hunt embarks on several perilous missions, including scuba diving into a sunken submarine, flying (and falling out of) a biplane, and engaging in intense action sequences on foot. Fans of the franchise will also be pleased to see Angela Bassett reprise her role as CIA Director Erika Sloane, a character she last portrayed in Mission: Impossible – Fallout.

The storyline picks up after the explosive events of Dead Reckoning, where Ethan Hunt faces off against a deadly AI system called The Entity. This powerful program can predict his every move and threatens global chaos if it falls into the wrong hands. In the final moments of Dead Reckoning, Ethan learns that The Entity is hidden aboard an old Russian submarine, but he’s not the only one looking for it. The mysterious Gabriel, played by Esai Morales, is back to pursue the same dangerous goal.

Alongside Cruise, several beloved characters return for the final chapter, including Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, Hayley Atwell, Vanessa Kirby, Pom Klementieff, Shea Whigham, Henry Czerny, Greg Tarzan Davis, Mariela Garriga, and Indira Varma. New cast members joining the franchise for The Final Reckoning include Hannah Waddingham, Janet McTeer, Nick Offerman, Holt McCallany, Katy O’Brian, and Tramell Tillman.

Christopher McQuarrie returns to direct and co-write The Final Reckoning, following his successful work on Rogue Nation, Fallout, and Dead Reckoning. McQuarrie has also collaborated with Cruise on major hits such as Top Gun: Maverick and the Jack Reacher series. The film’s script is penned by McQuarrie, Bruce Geller, and Erik Jendresen, with McQuarrie and Cruise serving as producers. Chris Brock, David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, Tommy Gormley, Don Granger, and Susan Novick will executive produce, with Gina Hallas as co-producer.

The countdown to Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning has officially begun. Mark your calendars for May 23, 2025, for what is sure to be an epic conclusion to Ethan Hunt’s perilous missions.
